Use Transportation in a Smart Way

Public transportation like trains and buses could be the first option for visiting racecourses. In particular, all of the large cities in Japan have an excellent public transportation network. Additionally, it is well known for its punctuality. Once you get accustomed to getting around using Japan’s reliable transportation, it might take some time to be tolerant of public transportation in other countries if it’s not so punctual:-)

If you stay in Japan for several days without a Japan Rail Pass, Suica or PASMO will be of great use. Passengers can use it to pay fares for trains, subways, and buses. They can also use it to shop in almost all the convenience stores and supermarkets nationwide. Suica or PASMO can be topped up.

It used to be available in ticket vending machines in stations for 500 yen as a deposit, about 3.50 US dollars. However, as of June 2024, the IC cards aren’t available to passengers due to difficulties in mass production stemming from the semiconductor shortage. You can use it through other measures like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and individual apps.

Please remember that Suica and PASMO are helpful in your daily life outside racecourses. Still, neither of them is accepted at most racecourses when you bet on races or buy something to eat and drink, except for the Chiba bicycle racecourse (TIPSTAR DOME CHIBA). It has gone digital completely since it completed its renovation in 2021.

For racecourses that are located a distance from the nearest stations or bus stops, many organizers offer free shuttle services for fans. These services, including buses and taxis, provide a cost-effective and convenient way to travel between the racecourse and the transportation hubs. To make the most of these services, confirm the operating hours on the racecourse websites before your visit.

For instance, Omura boat racing in Nagasaki prefecture provides fans with free transportation not only from the nearest train stations and a Shinkansen station but also from Nagasaki station, which takes about an hour to the racecourse.

If your destinations don’t offer a complimentary shuttle service, you should grab a taxi at the nearest stations. The Uber app works in Japan but doesn’t in the countryside.
